Straw houses

STRAWBELE – is one of the proven technologies for eco-houses.

It smells of straw first. It’s the smell of childhood. And when it is plastered – with soil and forest. Sometimes even grass, as it blooms. After spending a few nights in such a house, some people do not want to sleep anywhere else …

How are they made?

The supporting structure (traditionally wooden, mullion-transom) is filled with compacted straw cubes. Straw contains air, which is a good insulator. In the last phase, everything is covered with a thick layer of clay. A house built in this technology has a surprisingly good heat transfer coefficient.

The advantages of living in clay houses are as follows:

First of all – ecology

While building such a house, natural materials (such as clay, straw, lime, stone, perches, wood) are used, which are easily obtained in the nearest locatoin. Materials processing does not require complicated and high temperature processes, so it is not associated with the emission of carbon dioxide and other harmful substances.

Second – the health of residents

The clay houses have a very favorable microclimate, especially allergy-friendly, because they are not made of toxic materials. Clay plasters allow you to maintain a humidity level of about 60% Rh, thanks to their qualities they neutralize micro-contaminants, do not stick to dust (they are electrostatically neutral) and antiseptic (inhibit the growth of bacteria and mold on the walls). They are a great barrier against noise ensuring acoustic comfort. The penetration of electromagnetic waves is difficult.

Third – aesthetics

The plasticity of clay allows you to shape it freely. The warm natural color of the clay and the appearance of the house will certainly have a calming effect on residents.

Fourth – other operational advantages

Thick walls protect against cold as well as against summer heat. Clay is also one of the materials with high fire resistance and wood preserving (absorbing excess moisture).

Clay house – why is it worth building in eco style?

The growing popularity of ecological construction – both clay and straw houses, as well as wooden ones – is associated with many advantages of such buildings, which specialists indicate. When it comes to clay houses, their biggest advantages include, first of all, the fact that they create a good microclimate (clay well captures and absorbs moisture and accumulates heat). Houses made of these materials are also characterized by good temperature regulation and indoor air quality.

In addition, the materials from which ecological houses are made are safe for our health – they do not contain toxic substances. All this means that this type of construction is recommended especially for people with different types of allergies, families with children, as well as anyone who wants to take care of their health and the environment.

It is also worth mentioning that in houses made of clay, dust is not created and kept as in traditional buildings is; because clay prevents electrostatic charge. For people who care about the environment, it will also be important that the production of materials for building a house is environmentally friendly.

Interestingly, in houses made of clay, wooden elements are preserved by it. This affects their resistance, making the whole building more durable and economical. It is pointed out that a well-built clay house can be similar to passive houses.
